With Disney, everything is in the details. Today we focus on The Madrigal’s clothing. Did you know that each member’s gift is represented somehow within their outfits?!

Pepa’s Family

Pepa

Pepa’s gift controls the weather so her outfit is reflective of the sun.

Check out her sun shaped earrings and the ruffles on her dress that represent the sun’s rays.

Dolores

There is no hiding from Dolores, as she can hear a pin drop from a mile away.

Incorporating the yellow sun element’s from her mother, you can also find various sound waves along her shirt and skirt.

Camilo

Camilo can shapeshift into anyone he sees.

This amazing ability allows him to basically blend in anywhere, which is why chameleons are found on his poncho.

Antonio

Sweet Antonio, the youngest of the family is also the latest Madrigal to receive a gift- he can understand animals.

You can see a tribute to his abilities on the little vest he wears, after he receives his gift!  There are various animals embroidered along the sides.

Bruno

I’m just going to say it. We don’t talk about Bruno… because of his gift of prophecy that most people view as a curse.

Bruno uses sand in his casting ritual, which is why an hour glass can be viewed on his clothing.

Julieta’s Family

Julieta

Caring and nurturing, this momma has the ability to heal other’s with her cooking.

Rooted in the kitchen, Julieta’s gift is represented with a mortar & pestle.

Isabela

The perfect golden child, Isabela has the ability to conjure gorgeous flowers where ever she wishes.

Isabela’s dress is covered in flowers and as her gift evolves, the color of her dress changes to reflect the vibrant colors of her new plants & flowers.

Luisa

The brawn of the family, Luisa is gifted with super strength, which she uses to help all those in need.

Luisa’s muscles are the show stealer; therefore, her gift representation is a bit harder to spot. Barbells can be seen sewn at the hem of her skirt.

Mirabel

The main protagonist of the film has a deep love of her family and a special connection to her house, which she calls ‘Casita’.

Her empathy, love, and loyalty is reflective of the different gifts from each of her family members that are sewn onto her clothing.

She has a candle for her Abuela and flowers for Isabela.

A sun for her Aunt Pepa and a toucan & jaguar for her little cousin, Antonio.

On the lower half of her skirt she has a chameleon for Camilo and a dumbbell for Luisa.

I have heard that she also has a basket of food for her mother, but for the life of me, I could not find it. Of course, butterflies are a huge part of Mirabel persona, which also symbolizes her grandparents love for one another.

While I easily spotted the butterflies on Mirabel’s clothing, I was not aware of the embroidery of everyone’s gift. These details just make me love this movie even more!

1929 to 1939 were busy years for Walt Disney Productions as they created and released 75 musical shorts named “Silly Symphony.”

Each short was under 11 minutes and set to whimsical music. Innovated for it’s time, the films would become known for use of the multiplane camera and their incorporation of technicolor.

Click here to read more about the multiplane camera.

Firsts

The very first Silly Symphony, titled “The Skeleton Dance” was released on August 22, 1929.

Three years and 28 shorts after the release of “The Skeleton Dance”, the first technicolor film was released- “Flowers and Trees”.

Flowers and Trees was entered into the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 2021 for its achievements using the full color three-strip Technicolor process. The film has been described as “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

All the shorts were designed as stand alone stories without the notable Disney characters; i.e. Mickey, Minnie, Goofy… with one exception. Donald Duck made his very first appearance in 1934’s The Wise Little Hen.

Academy Awards

Most associate Snow White as Walt Disney’s first Oscar winning award, but the film did not win any categories. The famous picture of Walt with an Oscar and seven miniature statuettes were for recognition of a special achievement.

Disney’s first SIX Academy Awards actually came from The Silly Symphony Series.

Disney Studio’s first hit song, “Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf” came from Silly Symphony number 36, “Three Little Pigs”.

The Silly Symphonies final film, “The Ugly Duckling” would win the 7th and final Oscar for the film series in 1939.

It is neat to see the progression in pictures from black & white to color. The original few had a very similar format with their characters and their movements, which is probably how they released so many in a short span of time. Many of the shorts can be viewed on Disney+, but you need to search by title of the film, and not “Silly Symphony.”

In celebration of Mickey’s 94th Birthday, let’s take a look at how his design has evolved throughout the years.

Steamboat Willie

Mickey’s third short but the first to be released in theaters… and with synchronized sound!

The Cactus Kid

This is the last film to be animated by Ub Iwerks.

The Band Concert

Mickey’s first official cartoon in color.

Mickey’s Trailer

At this point, Walt still voiced Mickey.

Fantasia

One of Mickey’s most iconic roles, as The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. Noticeable changes have been made to his design- his face is a flesh color and white has been added to his eyes.

The Simple Things

In this “modern” styled cartoon, (Mickey is given eyebrows) Mickey spends a day at the beach with Pluto. It is the last of 56 shorts that appear in the theaters.

Mickey’s Christmas Carol

Mickey’s first theatrical short since 1953 (no more eyebrows!). The popular short marked the debuted of Wayne Allwine, the voice of Mickey for 26 years, until his death in 2009.

The Prince and the Pauper

This was the start of the return of classic Disney characters to film and television.

Mickey Mouse Works

Considered Mickey’s comeback, the series of shorts featured Mickey with his closest pals.

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse

Meeska Mooska, Mickey Mouse! This popular show featured a heavily computer graphic styling of Mickey. It would run until 2016.

Mickey Mouse

The self-titled show brought a different animated style from creator Paul Rudish. Paul embraced the early designs of Mickey, inspired by Ub Iwerks. This styling can still be found on the Disney+ streaming show, The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse and in Mickey’s first attraction, Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway.

Dancing With the Stars

While Rudish’s Mickey is still the mascot of Disney Television, this classically designed Mickey made a guest star appearance on the popular TV show, Dancing With the Stars.

In celebration of Minnie’s 94th Birthday, let’s take a look at how her design has evolved throughout the years.

Steamboat Willie

Considered Mickey and Minnie’s debut, Steamboat Will is actually their third short, but the first to be released in theaters.

On Ice

This marked Minnie’s first appearance in color.

Mickey’s Surprise Party

This introduced Minnie’s new animation design.

Bath Day

In the 40s, Minnie would appear in shorts starring the popular cat, Figaro.

Pluto’s Christmas Tree

Minnie appeared in a brief cameo at the end of the short, marking her last appearance in films for 31 years!

Mickey’s Christmas Carol

She’s backkkk!

Totally Minnie

This time, it is all about Minnie in her first television special! It would also be the debut of Russi Taylor, who voiced Minnie for 31 years, until her death in 2019.

Mickey Mouse Works

The cartoon series saw Minnie in a starring role alongside Mickey. The styling of the characters features the modern look we know today.

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse

The popular series brought an obviously computer generated look to the Sensational Six.

Minnie’s Bow Toons

Minnie and Daisy starred in the six season show, encompassing 55 short episodes. Minnie’s look appears to be a bit more fine tuned than in the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.

Mickey Mouse

Created by Paul Rudish, this television series drew inspiration from the original Ub Iwerks design of Mickey and Minnie.

Positively Minnie

Rudish’s design continues to be the mascot styling of the duo in current animation as well as the new attraction, Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway.
