Twinkling lights, colorful displays, and beautiful music–it was the most amazing Christmas lights display that I have ever seen in my life!

Christmas lights are one of my favorite things during this time of year! My husband is even known as the neighborhood Griswald for his growing Christmas light displays each year. We had never had the chance to see The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights in person so we were so very excited that we had a winter trip planned to Disney and Hollywood Studios was our first stop! I couldn’t wait for it to get dark so we could go see the streets light up! Our children were 6 and 3 and I think I was more excited than them! The sun had finally set and the time had come for us to go see what everyone had been talking about. We turned the corner and there is was–twinkling lights, colorful displays, and beautiful music–it was the most amazing Christmas lights display that I have ever seen in my life!

Nyer Family Trip, Dec 2015

It was magical-probably the most magical moment from my trip that year. I was in awe of the work that was put into it, the countless number of displays to look at, the sequences of lights dancing to the music BUT most of all was seeing my children (and my husband’s) reactions! Their faces will forever hold a special place in my heart. The joy and pure happiness was indescribable. I am so thankful that we had the chance to see this magnificent work of art before it closed January 6, 2016. After reminiscing of one of my favorite magical moments, I wanted to learn even more. Where did the The Osborne Family Spectacle of Lights come from?

History of The Osborne Family Spectacle of Lights

A little girl asked her daddy one year if he could decorate the outside of the house for Christmas; what started as a 1,000 light display for his daughter grew bigger and bigger each year.

Jennings Osborne was a business man in Little Rock, Arkansas (Fun Fact: I currently reside near here so I thought it was pretty cool that this all started where I live!!) He founded the Arkansas Research Medical Testing Center. Soon after, he was able to buy property in the middle of town and start his family. When his daughter was 6 years old she asked her daddy if he could decorate the outside of the house for Christmas; what started as a 1,000 light display for his daughter grew bigger and bigger each year. He actually purchased  the two properties adjacent to his own and expanded the display into them. Now that is dedication and LOVE! Each year more and more was added, eventually there was an illuminated globe, with Little Rock and Bethlehem marked, mounted in the back yard, two rotating carousels of lights, placed on each end of the estate’s circular driveway, a 70-foot tall Christmas tree of lights with 80,000 lights in three colored layers, mounted atop the home’s kitchen,  and a canopy of 30,000 red lights over a section of the driveway AND MORE!!! As his light display grew, so did the popularity of it, along with the some disgruntled neighbors. News stations would report on the amazing work he did and people would drive from all over to see this spectacular display, but in turn it caused major traffic issues and many complaints. In 1993, he started having some legal troubles; 6 lawsuits were filed by neighbors stating that emergency vehicles could not get to their homes if needed and traffic was a major issue. Jennings had to shorten the length of his display and continued to fight to keep it going longer. It lost at the Arkansas Supreme Court level and he pushed it to the Supreme Court, where it ultimately was ordered to be shut down in 1995.

[See image gallery at offstagewdw.com] Picture of Jennings Osbourne’s personal display at his home in Little Rock, AR.

The story gained national attention and this is where Disney comes in! Jennings got a lot of different offers from various companies to move his lights. Project director, John Phelan discussed moving the display to the Walt Disney World resort.  Osborne was interested but thought it would be put back onto another residential street in Orlando and initially declined.  This was until he understood the “Residential Street” was actually a back-lot section at Disney’s Hollywood Studios theme park.  Jennings was a huge fan and happily accepted!! It was then that The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights at Disney’s Holllywood Studios (known then as Disney-MGM Studios) was born!

Disney’s Hollywood Studios gave it a really good home for 20 years. Of course it grew even more and was an amazing sight to see starting in mid-November and running into the first week of January. Disney added even more displays and lights to see. When songs would play, the lights would “dance” and be in perfect sequence. It even received a major overhaul in 2011, when it was all switched to LED lights!  Starting in September, it took 20,000 man-hours to install the display each holiday season. The lights had a few moves to different streets during its tenure in order to make way for new attractions; ultimately,The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights closed January 6, 2016. When this display closed most of the light were donated to  Walt Disney World to the Give Kids a World Village for their “Night of a Million Lights” event, which we just highlighted during a previous Magical Monday! Click the Magical Monday tab to find it and read more about it.

Lucky for us there are tons of YouTube videos available so you can watch and see. I have even added one below for you to enjoy! I wish that The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights was still a yearly tradition so that I could take my youngest to see in person. I will forever cherish the memories we made and the magic that we felt that night!

For this Foodie Friday, I tried to replicate three of the Disneyland Paris Advent Calendar Recipes…and “try” I did! It was an absolute mess, worthy of Pinterest epic fail proportions. So come and enjoy the train wreck that it was!

First up, Minnie’s Yule Log. Let me preface with the fact that I am not a spectacular baker. I am not a bad one either, just average. Never mind that the measurements were in grams; I totally felt comfortable with Google converting them to cups. Fun fact, they didn’t convert equally! Same for the oven temp. Cool Cool. I was destined for failure, but since I committed, I gave an honest shot!

Click the picture for the recipe

Minnie’s Mule Log

Here are snapshots from Disneyland’s instructional video. I “thought” it looked doable!

[See image gallery at offstagewdw.com]

Guys, it was TERRIBLE! The sponge cake was hard and obviously not easily rolled. Who knows where I went wrong. Maybe the incorrect oven temp? Or the measurements. I also kind of skipped an entire step…but it was literally brushing vanilla soaked sugar water on top of the cake. I didn’t think it would be that big of a deal. It also tasted awful. It wasn’t even edible and went into the garbage; because of that, it wasn’t even a fail, it was an epic fail!

At least Riley and I were able to enjoy the chocolate ganache!

Next up, Mickey White Chocolate Chip Cookies. Now, you are probably thinking, “Surely this cannot be any worse!” I will let you decide for yourself.

The recipe’s measurements were already converted, which was a plus! I honestly thought the directions were easy to follow.

So obviously, I put the balls too close together…my bad. I am going to put this as only a minor fail, because it was at least edible AND my daughter still had fun decorating it. Anything that occupies her time is a win in my book!

Since they were edible, I gave the recipe one more chance. Luckily, I had enough batter to make two more cookies.  The second batch was considerably better; and they were only a tad burnt! Great success!

Last but not least, we have Tasty Hot Chocolate. All you need for this is:

-200g of chocolate, melted

-add sprinkles or marshmallows

-freeze for 30 min

-add hot milk  and enjoy!

Tasty Hot Chocolate

Here are snapshots from Disneyland’s instructional video.

[See image gallery at offstagewdw.com]

Reasons why this recipe cannot be classified as a complete success…first off, I did not have enough chocolate. I just used what I had left over. I also did not have a Mickey mold so I used a gingerbread and tree cookie cutter. Since I didn’t have a mold, when I took the chocolate out of the cutter, it broke into pieces! BUT it was still absolutely delicious. At that point I gave up on hot chocolate and ate it as straight up chocolate. And yes, they are both gone and I feel no remorse whatsoever.

I was going to share the measurement conversions for Minnie’s Yule Log but I think if I do, I will not be doing anyone any favors!

If you decide to try your hand at any of these recipes, please let us know! Wishing you all Happy Holidays!

The Christmas Season is in full swing. It seems decorations came out even sooner than usual. On Thanksgiving many of my neighbors (me included) were already decorating their yard. I think people are understandably desperate to feel a sense of normalcy and joy that the holidays bring.

When it comes to holiday cheer and decorations, Disney does it best! Did you know that Cast Members use up to 7,410 feet of ribbon to make 812 bows? That works out to be 1.4 miles of ribbon!

Or that it takes 150 semi-truck trailers to haul away all of the decorations?! A team of 10 Cast Members work exclusively on the décor for an entire year! Let’s take a look at each park to see what special magic they create!

Magic Kingdom Fast Facts

The tree located in the Town Square of Mainstreet, U.S.A. is 65 feet tall, has 5,400 LED lights, 2,365 ornaments, weighs 16.5 tons and is topped with a 2 foot star.

It usually takes 7 to 8 weeks to decorate Cinderella Castle with over 350,000 lights.  Sadly, this year they did not decorate for Castle Dream Lights.

There are 40 trees and 147 wreaths on display throughout the park.

[See image gallery at offstagewdw.com]

It takes two nights to decorate for Christmas. Park employees begin decorating after the last Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party on October 31st. Below you can watch a time lapse videos of the decorations going up. If you have not seen them, they are very cool to watch!

Epcot Fast Facts

On average, the Candlelight Processional is performed 117 times throughout November and December. There are more than 800 performers, including 200 guest choirs.

Most flower beds are replanted with gorgeous poinsettia plants.

Each pavilion decorates and offers themed food and drinks.

Living With the Land has a holiday transformation with lights, wreaths made of vegetables, and large ornaments.

Hollywood Studios Fast Facts

There are 12 high definition projectors used to transform the Tower of Terror into The Hollywood Toy Hotel.

There are 21 palm trees, each with programmable color changing LED lights

The Santa hat on Gertie the Dinosaur’s head is so big, it can fit four grown adults inside!

Animal Kingdom Fast Facts

There are 331 garland and 40 wreaths placed around the park.

Over 25,000 LED lights and 40,000 mini LED lights are used throughout the park.

Animal Kingdom’s Christmas parade uses flotillas on the water!

These gorillas are given their favorite treat in recycled paper and plants

The animals in the park are given special holiday themed enrichment treats.

Disney Springs Fast Facts

Disney Springs features over 2,000 individual décor, each uniquely designed to match the classic Florida theme.

The Tree Trail features over 25 uniquely themed trees

Giving gifts to my loved ones is one of my FAVORITE things to do anytime of the year, but especially during the holidays and it’s even better when I can add a touch of Disney to their gift!

Are you having a hard time finding a gift this Holiday season?! Look no further! Here are some suggestions of some Disney gifts that would be great for various ages. I have a pretty large family, ages ranging from 0 to adults, so I know how hard is it to find the perfect gift, especially when there are so many ages to buy for!

These gifts are ones that I personally thought were cute and would buy for my loved ones. When finding gifts, I try to find things that are developmentally appropriate, educational and FUN! We are not affiliated with any of these companies or with Amazon; I  just happened to find these items on Amazon since it it usually my go-to online shopping spot. The links are provided with each item. Enjoy!

Newborn to 6 months old

During the new days and early months, toys that stimulate a baby’s senses are best. “Playing is a great way for parents and caregivers to build that vital bond with their baby, while sensory stimulations helps baby’s brain grow.” (1) Soft toys that make gentle sounds or textured toys that are safe to teethe on are great. Books are also fantastic at any age; it’s never to early to read to your little one!

Preteens can be tricky, they are still interested in toys, yet some are starting to outgrow play things and look for more challenging and intriguing things to play. They still need to be challenged and given something technology free! Board games are ideal for this age, the whole family can even get in on the fun. So many skills are used and built during board game play.
