Last October, Disney began rolling out beautiful golden character statues throughout the four theme parks. They are finally all out! Besides adding some glam to the scenery, these statues allow guests to interactive with them in a unique way. Here is how it works-

First, you MUST have a MagicBand+, the newest version.

When you find a statue, walk up and wave your hand (the one with the MagicBand+) in front of it. You will feel a vibration & your band should light up.

The statue will “interact” by playing a flourish of music and/or a cute little message from the character! There are 35 statues, equaling 50 total characters. You can download the ‘Disney Fab 50 Quest’ on the Play Disney App to keep track of the statues that you find!

Some guests have reported issues with their MagicBands+ being unable to activate the statues. There is an easy way to fix this!

  1. Log into the My Disney Experience Map.
  2. Go to your account page- the three lines all the way to the right located on the bottom menu bar
  3. Scroll down to ‘MagicBands and More’
  4. Click on the name of whose MagicBand that you are adjusting.
  5. Select ‘Settings’ to adjust the sensitivity settings. *You will need to do this for each individual band.

On the other side of the spectrum, others have noted that the statues go off as they walk by. In the end, it will all come down to individual settings and the location of the statue sensors… which by the way, are not always in front of or attached to the statue.

Want to know which statues are found in each park? Check out the list below!

Figment has taken Epcot by storm! With the start of the International Festival of the Arts, running from January 14 to February 21, 2022, Figment has been highlighted throughout the festival in many different ways, but I think the most popular thing people were trying to get their hands on was the Figment popcorn bucket.

It’s no surprise why the Figment popcorn bucket is so popular, it’s quite possibly, the cutest and BEST popcorn bucket that has hit parks recently! It’s been reported that guests were in line for up to 7+ hours to get one of these. It definitely takes some dedication and patience to wait that long. One guest wanted to brighten someone’s day and decided to spread some kindness by gifting a popcorn bucket to an unsuspecting Figment fan who was at the back of the line. You can watch it all unfold here:

What an awesome magical moment. Hopefully this will help to ignite others to pay it forward and spread a little Disney cheer in their own way because One Little Spark of Kindness really can go a long way!

Lions, tigers, and puns… oh my! The Jungle Cruise has become synonymous with the hilarious Skippers who helm the attraction, but few know that the iconic dad jokes featured in the ride did not make an appearance until 6 years into the attractions run. The Jungle Cruise was originally serious and informative, more akin to Walt’s True-Life Adventure documentaries.

Disney Studios made 13 True-LifeAdventures in which 8 won Academy Awards!

When conceptualizing Disneyland, Walt wanted an attraction that could take guests on a tour through the waterways of the world. He envisioned tropical jungles with exotic plants and animals.

[See image gallery at offstagewdw.com]

The main problem? Southern California was practically a desert with 12-14 inches of rainfall. So Walt brought in two key individuals to make the attraction happen; Harper Goff, designer for the film 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and Bill Evans, the architect who helped Walt landscape his backyard locomotive. Both men would draw inspiration for the attraction from the recent film, The African Queen, as well as other African & South Pacific aesthetics.

[See image gallery at offstagewdw.com]

The Jungle Cruise will be the first attraction to break ground during the construction of Disneyland, so that the plants and trees could have an extra growing season.

[See image gallery at offstagewdw.com]

Majority of the land that Disney bought held matured orange groves. Since the attraction would need dense foliage, a team went through and marked the trees they wanted to keep with a red marker. Unfortunately, the bulldoze operator was color blind and just about bull dozed them all! The trees they were able to save, were planted upside down because they looked “exotic.”

[See image gallery at offstagewdw.com]

Once the area was cleared, Harper Goff, Disneyland’s first “Imagineer”, traced the outline of the river with a stick. He then walked 10 to 15 feet across to do the other side!

Meanwhile, Bill Evans was having a hard time finding trees and shrubs to create the dense jungle appearance. He literally drove around Anaheim and went door to door, buying the most exotic looking foliage that he could find. Coincidentally, during the construction of Disneyland, Interstate-5 was being built. Bill would salvage trees from the side of the road that were torn down to make way for the interstate.

One tree in particular became famous among Imagineers- when Walt was purchasing land for Disneyland, he bought 10 acres of orange grove property from the Dominguez Family. The couple stated that one of the established palm trees on the property was a gift given to them on their wedding day. Walt promise to preserve the palm; and he did! The “Dominguez Palm” was placed inside the Jungle Cruise (was moved a few times during refurbishments) and has flourished. It currently stands tall and beautiful in Adventureland.

[See image gallery at offstagewdw.com]

The grandson of the couple who lived on that property, Ron Dominquez, began working at Disneyland four days before it’s grand opening. Ron stated that his home use to stand where the entrance to Pirates of the Caribbean is today. The 20-year was a ticket taker but would soon work his way to supervisor of Main Street, U.S.A., then supervisor of Frontierland, Adventureland, and Tomorrowland (not at the same time). Ron would eventually be appointed director of operations and in 1990, Executive Vice President of West Coast operations. He was inducted as a Disney Legend in 2000. Nicknamed “Mr. Disneyland” he served 39 years with the Walt Disney Company and was given his own window on Main Street, U.S.A. in Disneyland.

[See image gallery at offstagewdw.com]

As construction went on, Walt decided that although he wanted real animals to highlight the attraction, he knew they wouldn’t be as exciting as they would most likely sleep all day.  Imagineers created mechanical animals and Walt brought in the special effects team from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea to complete the final look. The technology was primitive but they were pioneering the animatronics as they worked. The animals were powered by oiled hydraulics and needed to be strategically placed to hide any mechanical parts that were exposed.

[See image gallery at offstagewdw.com]

All animatronics located in the water and the boats ran on a track.

[See image gallery at offstagewdw.com]

The river is dyed a murky green to hide the track system. The famous Schweitzer Falls aka home to the “backside of water” joke, is the mixing station for the dye.

July 17, 1955 was opening day for the Disneyland park. In addition to the 28,000 people to enter the gates, 90 million viewers would watch from the comfort of their own home. This was an impressive number considering at that point there was a population in the US of 170 million people! All who attended or watched the ceremonies were entralled with the Jungle Cuise. It was dubbed “A True Life Adventure.”

[See image gallery at offstagewdw.com]

Walt had his own apartment in Disneyland, allowing him to spend the night whenever he pleased. The apartment located above the fire station on Main Street, U.S.A., was located next to the waterways of the Jungle Cruise. One night, the animal noises were not turned off, keeping Walt up all night!

Walt LOVED to ride the Jungle Cruise. On his first ride since the park opening, the Skipper was so nervous he put the ride on full throttle, making the 7.5 minute trip only 4 minutes long. After complaining, management put in alarms to ensure Skippers had the script timed with specific points. Today, Skippers use landmarks as their cues.

Staying true to Disney’s True-Life Adventure days, the original script was dry and educational (sprinkled with a few unfunny jokes). Several years into the park’s opening, rumor has it Walt overheard a mother say she would skip riding the Jungle Cruise because she had ridden it before. Disheartened by this, Walt consulted with animator and gag man, Marc Davis. Marc told Walt that ultimately the ride was not funny, so Walt tasked him with refurbishing the ride. Marc went in and rewrote the storyline, adding wit and new scenes with animals. Since technology had improved since the ride opened, Imagineers were able to do more with the animatronics, adding humor into the animals actions and movements. Marc also rewrote the Skipper’s script- he is the man responsible for the Dad Joke/Puns that the attraction is famous for.

[See image gallery at offstagewdw.com]

Since Marc left his mark on the ride, Skippers have continued to add to the jokes Now the attraction script is like a menu- for each area, a Skipper can choose the jokes they want to tell, adding their own special flair.

[See image gallery at offstagewdw.com]

The Jungle Cruise family has grown, adding four more locations; Magic Kingdom, Tokyo Disneyland & Hong Kong Disneyland, and a movie. Despite the growth & adaptations, one thing is certain; the Jungle Cruise at Disneyland will forever be known as the original Disney attraction- filled with mystery, adventure, enchantment, and thanks to Marc Davis… puns.

Disney Weddings are not just limited to the Grand Floridian Wedding Pavilion. There are four destinations (Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Aulani, and Disney Cruise Line), with 50 venue sites at Walt Disney World alone. But we are not here to talk about the endless wedding possibilities…we are here to talk about CAKE.

A team of dedicated pastry chefs work exclusively on wedding cakes to create specially designed cakes to bring a wedding to life.

There are the simple, classic designs:

A step further with a little flair or embellishment:

Then there are the mack daddy themed cakes:

A big part of that is the BGM- that’s Imagineer speak for “Background Music.” It is another way guests are immersed into the park’s story. One of my favorite things to listen to while working on this fun blog, is Disney ambience music. I can’t help but dance and feel like I am at the park. Tom Sawyer Island is often overlooked by many, which is a shame because it is the perfect place to relax and let the kids go bananas without worrying about the crowds. There are lovely walking paths, a fort & cave to explore, and an awesome barrel bridge. I literally will run back and forth on it and I am in my late thirties

Back in the day, Cast Members would hide several of “Tom’s” paint brushes around the island for guests to find. Once found and turned in, the guest and their family would receive a bonus FASTPass for Splash Mountain or Thunder Mountain!

They ended the scavenger hunt back in 2013, most likely due to the switch to FastPass+. Then as quickly as it went away, it unexpectedly returned in January of 2020, with some adjustments. Cast Members would still hide a paint brush but instead of a FastPass, the lucky guest would receive an adorable certificate.

Since Covid, Tom Sawyer Island has had limited activities, and the scavenger hunt has yet to return. Hopefully, as things turn back to “normal”, guests will soon be able to hunt for the paintbrushes again. You just never know when, so make sure next time you are there to keep an eye out!

I say it just about everyday- I WANT TO LIVE AT DISNEY! Well, turns out I can. I just need several million, no biggie .

Let me introduce, Golden Oak at Walt Disney World!

It is located a hop, skip, and a jump away from The Wilderness Lodge and Fort Wilderness.

Golden Oak is first and foremost a luxury community. That means clubhouse, membership benefits, golf courses, customizable homes…some of their house plans offer golf cart storage…so yeah, luxury is putting it mildly.

[See image gallery at offstagewdw.com]

Truth be told, these types of communities can be found pretty much anywhere. What makes Golden Oak so special? It has the DISNEY TOUCH!

[See image gallery at offstagewdw.com]

Character sculptures can be found along sidewalks, paths, and footbridges, as well as customizable designs in the homes.

Names of some of the neighborhoods and streets also pay homage to Disney roots.

  • Symphony Grove is inspired by Walt Disney’s Silly Symphonies.
  • Kimball Trace is named after Ward Kimball, an animator known as one of Disney’s Nine Old Men. He had a shared love of railroads and often consulted with Imagineering in different park projects.
  • Marceline is named after the beloved hometown of Walt. Marceline, Missouri is also the inspiration for Main Street, U.S.A.
  • Blaine Court is named after Imagineer and Sculptor, Blaine Gibson. He is the gifted artist behind the “Partners” statue of Walt and Mickey holding hands as well as Roy O. Disney and Minnie sitting on a park bench.

Club Members have access to Extra Magic Hours in the parks, free merchandise delivery, preregistration bookings for Disney marathons, access to the ESPN track & fields, golf course discount rates, as well as access to the DVC lounges at Bay Lake Tower at the Contemporary and the Imagination Pavilion at Epcot. Members are also invited to various special events at parks with discount/activity services and have access to transportation across the resort area.

Golden Oak is made up of 7 distinct neighborhoods & has a partnership with the Four Seasons (the Four Seasons residences are worthy of their own post!):

The neighborhoods center around the styles of Old Florida, Caribbean, and European with nature preserves and lush landscapes. Each neighborhood has a community park or playground.

The Golden Oak website is a bit tricky. It does not show specific photos from each neighborhood, rather from “estate-sized homes” located throughout the community. Unless there is a specific home for sale, pictures and floor plans are vague.

Symphony Grove

Houses sit on approximately .25 acres and range from 3,600 – 4,900 sq ft.

There are four houses for sale right now in Golden Oak, one of them is located in Symphony Grove!

[See image gallery at offstagewdw.com]

The Cottages Located in Symphony Grove

These “cozy” cottages sit on approximately 1/5th of an acre and range from 1,800 – 3,800 sq ft.

There are currently no homes for sale in this neighborhood, but here are some more pics of the community!

[See image gallery at offstagewdw.com]

Kimball Trace

These Tuscan inspired homes sit on approximately .25 acres and range from 3,000 – 5,000 sq. ft.

[See image gallery at offstagewdw.com]

Marceline

Host of two community parks, Marceline homes sit on approximately .25 acres and range from 3,100 – 6,000 sq ft.

[See image gallery at offstagewdw.com]

Kingswell

These homes sit on half an acre and range from 5,000 – 7,000 sq ft.

There are currently no homes for sale in this neighborhood, but here are some more pics of the community!

[See image gallery at offstagewdw.com]

Silverbrook

Over a bridge and through the conservation area, to Silverbrook we go! These homes sit on half an acre and range from 5,000 – 7,000 sq ft.

There are currently no homes for sale in this neighborhood, but here are some more pics, because these houses and patios are stunning!

[See image gallery at offstagewdw.com]

Carolwood

Now we’ve made it to the cream of the crop. These homes sit on the largest amount of land at 3/4 of an acre and range from 6,500 – 12,000 sq ft. They also come with golf course views.

[See image gallery at offstagewdw.com]

Summerhouse

[See image gallery at offstagewdw.com]

The Golden Oak club house has many amenities; business office, pool, gym, group fitness classes (yoga, Pilates, spin, walking groups), kid & teen programs. It is also home to three restaurants; Boltons (“casual” dining), Markhams (dining experiences/events), and Tyler’s Lounge (open on select dates). By the way, they have their own garden and receive many of the other vegetables from The Land greenhouse in Epcot!

That’s not all folks! When you become a member, a whole world of opportunity is open up to you. Culinary demonstrations, holiday themed dinners, beverage seminars & tastings, and Disney designed experiences from Club Member Services. Reservations at the Grand Floridian Spa? They got you covered! A private adventure at The Tower of Terror?! Sure, why not! Want to bring in the New Year with a dessert party while watching Fantasmic!? They can handle it.

Life at Golden Oak is certainly a fairy tale! Life on Walt Disney World Resort property is about as close as we can hope to get to living IN Cinderella Castle. If money wasn’t a question, would you live here? Let us know what you think!

Thrill rides go beyond fast roller coasters. They offer drops, dips, spins, acceleration, inversions, pyrotechnics, and 3 & 4D elements! They are more than a ride but rather an experience. Today we are going to explore the thrill rides found in Walt Disney World.

Magic Kingdom Park

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

Located in Frontierland of Magic Kingdom, Big Thunder is a runaway mine train you want to be on!

  • Max Speed- 30 mph
  • Track Length- 2,780 feet
  • Ride Time- 3 min 30 sec
  • Ride Vehicles- There are a total of 6 trains, with 5 in rotation at one given time, that hold a total of 30 passengers each. The train names are: U.B. Bold, U.R. Daring, U.R. Courageous, I.M. Brave, I.B. Hearty, and I.M. Fearless

  • Locations- Disneyland (1979), Magic Kingdom (1980), Tokyo Disneyland (1987), and Disneyland Paris (1992)

Fun Fact- Thunder Mountain can help guests pass kidney stones! Yes, really! A study was conducted through the Journal of the American Osteopathic Association, due to patients reportedly passing kidney stones after riding the coaster. To conduct the study, a 3D model of a kidney was created. Researchers placed real urine and three different sized kidney stones into the model. They placed the model in a backpack and rode the attraction 20 times! When researchers sat in the back of the train, regardless of size, the stones passed 64% of the time, oppose to when they were seated in the front, stones passed only 17% of the time. Their study, “support the anecdotal evidence that a ride on a moderate-intensity roller coaster could benefit some patients with small kidney stones.” (Source Live Science) I know a trip to Disney is good for your mental health, but would have never guessed the benefit it has to your kidneys!

This attraction in such high demand that “boarding passes” are often distributed within minutes. Guests arrive to the park as early as 5:30 am to get into the park and obtain a pass! By the way, passes are available at 7am using the Walt Disney World Experience App. This means guests arrive as early as 5:30 and must wait until 7 for the passes to become available. Anybody designated in groups 1-129 are guaranteed to ride it. If for some reason they do not, they are given a fast pass to return the next day. Spike’s Pollen-nation Exploration

This springtime scavenger hunt is fun for all ages. Spike the Bee has left his pollination trail all across Epcot collecting nectar and pollinating the gardens. Guests can purchase a map and stickers and follow his trail and explore the beauty that the International Flower and Garden Festival has to offer. Be on the lookout for spike in the beautiful gardens and complete the map, once the map is completed, you can return to  Disney Traders or World Traveler shop to receive a special surprise!

Egg-stravaganza Scavenger Hunt

This egg-stra special event is another sweet surprise that guests can do as they are walking around the World Showcase.  Similar to Spike’s Pollen-nation Exploration map, guests can purchase an egg hunt map to use. Oversized, painted character eggs are strategically hidden around. Inside stores, up high and low; the hunt is on! Once the map is complete a little surprise can be picked up at Disney Traders or World Traveler shop. My kiddos loved completing this egg hunt when we visited a few years ago!

Disney collections come in all shapes and sizes. People start with a love for a character, attraction, or park and it seems to grow from there. For my family, we love Pin Trading, but we also love collecting sets and displaying them on cork boards in our rooms.  We commemorate our trips or the first time riding a ride with a pin too. Our kids just love displaying their pins and look forward to collecting more with each visit!

Another mini-collection that started was when we were Annual Passholders.  We wanted something extra special to commemorate each visit. After visiting the Art of Disney store at Epcot, we fell in love with the Disney Collection by Britto!

[See image gallery at offstagewdw.com]

After reminiscing a bit about my Disney collections, I just had to see what other Disney fans were collecting…Take a look at these!!

World’s Largest Disney Prop Collection

Joel Magee, AKA the Toy Scout, has a Disney prop collection worth nearly $2 million! It includes seat parts from the Peter Pan pirate ship and the original Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride vehicle. He also has the original hitch hiking ghost props from the Haunted Mansion ride at Disney World.

Joel collects more than just Disney props and memorabilia; he got the name The Toy Scout, from his collection of many vintage toys and collectables. His entire life has been dedicated to finding, selling, appraising, and trading these items. He also is Pawn Stars Disney go-to expert!

To learn more about The Toy Scout visit: http://toyscout.com/about/

Largest Collections of Mickey Mouse Memorabilia

Janet Esteves holds the records for the the largest collection of Mickey Mouse memorabilia. She has 10,210 items, including studded animals, toys, hats, keychains, puzzles, and toys.

Largest Winnie the Pooh Collection

Deb Hoffman holds the record for the largest Winnie the Pooh collection. She has close to 9,000 items including stuffed toys, figurines, porcelain plates, toys and more!!

World’s Largest Stitch Collection

Self Proclaimed BIGGEST Lilo and Stitch fanatic, Suzy Fisher, states she has seen the movie over 3000 times and holds the record for the largest Stitch Collection, which includes over 1,900 Stitch memorabilia!

Britain’s Biggest Disney Collection

This collection has not been recorded in the Guinness Book (but should be!!); Amanda and Adam Lennard have a HUGE Disney collection including a variety of Disney characters in all sizes and forms! The collections are even sorted into smaller collections by Disney character.

Even though our collections aren’t nearly as big as these, they hold a very special place in your hearts! Do you have a Disney collection?! Tell us about it!
