When Anna meets Hans, she literally falls for the first guy she meets.
He seems legit. I mean, look at that face! How can someone fake that pure look of infatuation/blissfulness?! We all believed him.
Homeboy has twelve brothers…TWELVE…it is believable that he also fell for (quite possibly) the first girl who gave him attention.
Then they went off and had a wonderful evening together.
How someone could fake that chemistry is beyond me. I have to believe that their shared goofiness, awkwardness, and connection was in fact real.
You know what happens next…they ask for Elsa’s blessing for a marriage, are shot down, Elsa reveals her powers, runs off, and Anna goes after her, leaving Hans in charge. Bold move Anna, bold move. You would think she had trusted advisors for that, but the point is mute.
While off on her rescue mission, we the audience, still see the good side of Hans. He seems to genuinely care about his duty and the well being of the people of Arendelle.
He keeps up his act and threatens treason to the Duke of Weaselton…excuse me, Weselton, when he threatens Queen Elsa.
When Anna’s horse returns without her, Hans gathers a party to go find her and Elsa. He orders that “No harm is to come to the Queen.” He finds Elsa first and begs her to come back. He stops her from potentially killing Weselton’s cronies, telling her to not be the monster everyone fears she is.
Magic happens, a cronie attempts to shoot Elsa with a crossbow bolt, Hans knocks the crossbow up, the bolt hits a chandelier instead of Elsa (some may argue that he wanted the chandelier to fall on her…but why not just let the cronie kill her??) they are able to apprehend her and take her back to Arendelle’s castle.
Back over to Anna, Kristoff, Olaf, and Sven.
Elsa had accidentally hit Anna with a freezing spell so Kristoff takes her to the only family that he has, the trolls.
When they see her, to say they are elated is an understatement. They immediately assume that Kristoff and Anna are a couple.
When they find out that Anna is already engaged, they huddle up and sing….
“So she’s a bit of a fixer-upper, that’s a minor thing. Her quote “engagement” is a flex arrangement, and by the way, I don’t see no ring.”
“So she’s a bit of a fixer-upper, her brain’s a bit betwixt. Get the fiancé out of the way, and the whole thing will be fixed!”
After this moment, it is all down hill for Hans.
Anna returns to the castle in hope that Hans will break the spell with true love’s kiss. When he said “Oh Anna, if only there was someone out there who loved you.” I swear the entire theater gasped.
Hans is the villain?! MIND BLOWN. But what if he was turned into the villain against his will? What if the trolls did some freaky magic (we are unsure of their capabilities and the radius of their spells)? I mean, it would have been out of their love for Kristoff. They would not have known the situation with Hans and could have just assumed he was some poor Joe Schmo that lived in the town. Ultimately, unaware of the effect their magic meddling would have had.
In the end, Anna’s true love for her family comes through and she has her sweet, sweet revenge on Hans.
I was all for this moment…still am. Get him, girl! If he truly was a villain, from the very start, then he deserves that and so much more. BUT if his actions were influenced magically, then I kind of feel for the guy. Ultimately, he is booted out of the picture and Anna has her happy ending with Kristoff. For this everyone is glad…except Hans!
What are your thoughts? Was Hans the big baddie the entire movie? Could the trolls have had a role in his intentions? Let us know what you think!
