Disney History Wear it Wednesday

Must Watch! Prop Culture on Disney+

Clothing is powerful. It makes a statement. It tells a story.

For Wear it Wednesday, I really wanted to dig deeper into costumes or some kind of Disney clothing. As I was looking,  I just happened to stumble across this docuseries on Disney+ titled Prop CultureAt first I wasn’t sure that I could connect the two: props and clothing–BUT BOY WAS I WRONG! Wardrobe is a prop in any film that you watch. Clothing is powerful. It makes a statement. It tells a story. Costumes are designed specifically for each character and that outfit has more meaning, depth and it is thoughtfully put together. Every. Single. Detail. Costume designers have a very important role in any film. They bring the characters to life. Think about it, clothing places you in a certain time period, it gives you a sense of what a person may be like,  and even helps the actor get into character.

Prop Culture is my new favorite show! Dan Lanigan is a movie prop collector; he takes you on an AMAZING exploration of movie props and costumes from some of your favorite Disney movies to include:

  • Mary Poppins
  • Tron
  • The Nightmare Before Christmas
  • Pirates of the Caribbean:The  Curse of the Black Pearl
  • Honey, I Shrunk the Kids
  • The Chronicle of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
  • Who Framed Roger Rabbit
  • The Muppet Movie

Dan gets together with the crew, filmmakers, and actors from these films and they reminisce and tell incredible stories from their experiences; sharing the history behind these treasures. He takes you to the Disney archives warehouse (where movie props and artifacts are stored), he visits private collectors, and he, himself, has even helped to track down lost movie props and see that they are restored and returned to Disney for future generations to have!

The very first episode will have you hooked and even bring you to tears. I know it did for me. I really want to share every single part that made me laugh, smile (and cry) but I don’t want to spoil it. Check out the trailer and try the first episode to see for yourself!

After this, next time you are watching a movie,  you might start taking a closer look at the wardrobe.Clothing is powerful. It makes a statement. It tells a story.
