Theme Parks

Show/Concept Design and Illustration

Walt Disney Imagineering is the innovative team behind the creation, design, and storytelling that brings the magic of Disney alive! They are the heart and soul of the attractions, resorts, and theme parks.

In today’s Theme Park Thursday post, we will look at examples of one of the Imagineering’s Disciplines:

Show/Concept Design and Illustration

This team is responsible for producing initial drawings and renderings of an idea. Here they ask, “What can it be?” Their artwork will be the starting point, providing everyone with a shared vision.

I love looking at the early renderings and seeing how the idea’s evolved. Some of the final products do not stray too far from initial concepts, and then some turn out very different! It is interesting to see ideas that never come to be. Below are galleries showing concept art for the different parks and areas around the resort:

Magic Kingdom Park

Epcot

Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park

Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach Water Park

Disney Springs

Various Disney Resorts

Which ideas did you like that were never built? I love the idea of a Beastly Kingdom! It is surprising that they never moved forward with it, especially since a dragon is represented on the Animal Kingdom logo. Now that you see it, you can’t unsee it 😉

Which art illustrations were your favorite to view? Do you have a particular style that you liked? I love the pieces illustrated by Herb Ryman. I love his style! We would love to hear your thoughts! Feel free to share in the comment section below. ❤️Tara
